With a background in Secondary Art and Design Education, Will Grant has long been obliged to consider the pedagogic relationship between image and language. Stibbs (1998, 203) wrote on children in the art classroom that, 'if they have more words for what they see, they will see more', a counter-intuitive, interpretative insight that strongly informed Grant’s passion for teaching about art through vocabulary and dialogue.
Related to this interest, Grant has been an active trustee of the ARTiculation Prize for the last seven years, a national celebration of young people sharing their passion for the visual arts through public speech. As Senior Lecturer at UWE, Grant has been experimenting with novel approaches to participant generated artistic data. Most recently he has done so alongside student teachers, who have expressed their changing hopes and ideals for their future practice through visual artmaking. He has latterly transcribed these works through an ekphrastic process inspired by Feldman’s art critique, and used them as prompt in elicitation interviews.
