Over the past 30 years Judith Dean has been in visual and textual dialogue with disparate sites — public, private, rural, urban (including objects and words), mostly working with installation and sculpture, also performance, video, and online projects. Using various materials, i.e. whatever became appropriate at the time — e.g. wax crayon sharpenings, granite, found objects (e.g. pencils, seeds, postcards, pizza, trousers etc), bronze, silver, digital prints, clay, wood, wool etc.
She now makes paintings concerned with installation within pictorial space and writing the image, addressing notions of singularity, framing and authorship. Including divergent perspectives, blind alleys, dead ends, new horizons, employing her non-writing hand, Chinese (calligraphy) brushes, and other things… Earlier writing involved the adoption / adaptation of sites of information, including the synopsis, the letter, the guide, the list, the lecture; the latter in performance-lectures Living in the Gesamtkunstwerk, Force8, West Bay, Bridport, 2016 and Painting as Food, Thinkspace, Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, London, 2018. She has exhibited widely, both nationally and internationally
