Katharine Platts is a multidisciplinary artist creating artworks, events and immersive experiences, with collaborative projects and artist-led initiatives forming a key part of her practice. She also works with arts organisations as a producer and technician.
Her practice is rooted in a fascination with the alchemical and transmutational abilities of matter, often exploring the weird and uncanny. This is grounded in site-specific research which she uses to construct narratives that consider interspecies relationships and their relation to the surrounding environs. She draws on scientific processes encountered within these sites, investigating how processes of change can enable us to find alternative perspectives and possibilities. Writing is integral to her working process, from research through to realisation, most often actualised within moving image and bookworks.
Recurring themes include the magical and mystical, the biological and geological, the subterranean and fragmented. The outcomes take many forms including installation, photography, image manipulation, writing, moving image, sound, sculpture, bookwork and painting.
