Rebecca Goddard is an artist working with clay, materiality and language to think out our place in time and geology.
She uses words to shift her thinking into different directions when she is using materials. To make has often been articulated as a form of conversation or dialogue with a material, and therefore, to articulate those conversations and thoughts into the written and spoken word can be powerful and surprising. Sometimes an intimacy can be evoked like this which she finds compelling.
These writings are sometimes observational and reflective, address a material directly or obliquely. Sometimes they don’t move beyond a note book, sometimes they feel more significant than that. Often, she’s not sure how they sit within her practice.
Rebecca is Senior lecturer in Media and Cultural Production at UWE Bristol.
