Owen is a composer, artist, lecturer, and researcher with a focus on interdisciplinary collaboration that integrates art, science and technology. Exploring his interest in a kind of parasitic co-creation, he likes to investigate the extent to which other phenomena, data, algorithms, AI, and of course people, can make his work for him.
His project Crystallographic Composition saw him collaborate with Architects and Crystallographers from Cardiff University to consider opportunities for music composition within crystallographic data-sets and modelling algorithms. The work was shown at Acud Macht Neu Gallery, Berlin, in 2018. A current project, When Seeds Speak, in collaboration with artist Miranda Whall, explores composition using data from the metabolomic analysis of black oat seeds. This work will premiere at Chapter in Cardiff in September 2024 and be shown at Somerset House in 2025.
His work has been presented internationally, including at Fact Liverpool, Goldsmiths, The Bartlett, University of the West of England, Bath Spa University, Concordia University, Braunschweig Film Festival, Od Arts festival and featured as part of Milan Fashion Week. Exhibitions of his work include Exeter Phoenix, 2010; Acud Macht Neu, Berlin, 2018; Extra City Kunsthal, Antwerp, 2023; Spike Island, 2024; and forthcoming at Somerset House, 2025.
